Abstract: As synthetic dyes have dominated the market for the last sixty years, natural dyes and natural mordants are being rediscovered by consumers. With the current environmental and economic consciousness, research in this area should be focused on natural mordants for dyeing textiles. The purpose of this article is to present an in-depth analysis of the mordants used to dye textiles with natural dyes as well as methods for and types of natural mordants, colour fastness properties of natural dyes, and classification of natural mordants based on their chemical structure. This paper also discusses the different classes of mordants used for fixing the colouration of textile substrates, their mechanism, and the sources of the mordants. Natural mordants are a good alternative to synthetic mordants for textile dyeing and can be used to overcome the challenges associated with synthetic dyes in textile dyeing. In the present work, a natural mordant Aloevera and Banana Sap was extracted and used alone and in combination with each other in Bamboo fabrics with Rheum Emodi and Rubia Cordifoilia, Yellow and Red natural dye to make the Bamboo Fabric Colourful which is already a highly breathable and anti-allergic fabric. The colour of the Bamboo Fabric revealed bonding between Bamboo fabric and green materials. The colours of the Bamboo fabrics dyed with Rheum Emodi and Rubia Cordifolia extracted was quantified in terms of CIELab (a*, b* & c*) and K/S values. The effects of different treatment on fastness properties including Light and Wash fastness were assessed by ISO standard test method and Simultaneous mordanting gave best result in both fastness properties as well as higher K/S values.
