The knowledge and skills of software engineers are probably the most important factors in determining the success of software development. Through this study, we seek to identify the most important competencies that determine workplace success in the IT sector across India. These competencies were identified by industry professionals themselves based on the competencies displayed by them on a daily basis. A list of 12 competencies were to be ranked from 1 (Most important) to 12 (Least important). Based on the survey responses, analysis was carried out to analyze the importance of competencies as perceived by the respondents. The competency patterns that arise are then analyzed geographically and based on gender. The differences that emerged were identified and this can help in the development of competencies in software engineers.en_US
