Abstract: Onion is an essential vegetable which is grown in India. It is one of the widely available vegetable. Being one of the most important vegetable, it is also highly sensitive commodity. And the price movements affects each and every citizen of the country. Therefore, the study aims to analyze the prices and arrivals trends of onion over the time frame 2012-2016 which is available on AGMARKNET and NHB portals. The study tries to find out if there is any general trend which can be seen in the prices and arrivals of onion in major onion markets of the country. The study also aim to present a comparative analysis of the data available on the portals and analyze the difference in the values. This study tries forecast the modal prices of Onion for a particular variety using time series modeling, data cleansing, filtering, soring, are the essential tasks conducted as a part of this process. The time series modeling has been attempted to forecast Paddy prices in 2017. Microsoft Excel 2013 & R programming have been used for time for time series analysis. The last objective of the study is to develop a diagnostic tool for major markets where onion arrivals are high. The diagnostic tool will help the data quality by monitoring the data reporting process continuously. Microsoft Excel and R Programming was used for developing the diagnostic tool.
