Abstract: | The race to the new heights and architecture has not been without challenges. High rise structures have continued to face extreme loading effects such as dynamic wind and seismic effects. The lateral loading becomes more dominating as the structure height increases. The tall buildings shall be designed by taking various important parameters in mind such as strength, serviceability etc. As the building becomes slender, the most important consideration is human comfort against the various lateral loads. In the design of high rise building the most important feature is stiffness, which can be incorporated in the building by adopting different lateral load resisting systems. For example, in field of bridge engineering the upper and lower span limits of the bridge is decided considering the maximum efficiency. Similarly, in the field of tall buildings different structural systems are required for different heights. Therefore, each system is economical up to a certain height above which system has to be changed. There are a lot of structural systems present which resists the lateral loading as well as gravity loading. The first and important task of any designer is to ensure that the selected system resists the lateral displacements of the building under the permissible limits. In this research, a study has been carried out on the efficiency and viability of different structural systems up to certain heights. In the first part of this report, background of the study and literature review of the previous study is presented. Initially a RCC building in zone 4 is adopted with square plan 45x45 m and story height 3.5 m. The building height is increased. |
