Abstract: | The reduction of earthquake risk will require improved understanding of structural earthquake behavior, advancement of the methods used to simulating structural response, and the development of new seismic design procedures. In multi-storey reinforced concrete buildings the seismic inertia forces generated at its floor levels are transferred through the various structural elements to the ground. The failure of a column can affect the stability of the whole building, but the failure of a beam causes localized effect. Lack of ductility in columns, beams, and connections has been blamed for the most serious damage to the major structures that occurred during recent earthquakes. That is why moment resistant ductile frames of reinforced concrete are designed for strength and ductility. Strength relates to the maximum capacity of the structural member to resist the earthquake load and ductility relates to the maximum deformation beyond the yield stress without loss of strength. To prevent... |
