Abstract: In this project, the design and simulation of a fuzzy logic based voltage controller for regulating the output voltage of a synchronous generator is carried out. The simulation study is carried out on a 187MVA, 13.8kV alternator. An automated fuzzy logic based control strategy is presented for controlling the armature voltage of the synchronous generator by varying its field voltage. The controller makes an intelligent decision on the amount of field voltage that should be applied to the generator in order to keep the output voltage at its rated value. The control algorithm is implemented in MATLAB. The performance of the fuzzy logic controller is compared with a conventional PI controller and also a sliding mode controller (SMC). It is observed that fuzzy logic controller gives better performance than either of the two controllers. Fuzzy logic controller is rapidly becoming a viable alternative for classical controllers. The reason for this is that the fuzzy controller can closely i...
