Abstract: The planning or design of a reservoir requires an analysis to determine how sediment deposits will be distributed in the reservoir. This is a difficult aspect of reservoir sedimentation because of the complex interaction between hydraulics of flow, reservoir operating policy, inflowing sediment load, and changes in the reservoir bed elevation. The traditional approach to analyzing the distribution of deposits has relied on empirical methods, all of which require a great deal of simplification from the actual physical problem. Firstly, an Empirical Area Reduction method is considered for analysis of sediment distribution. To know the new zero level at dam and sediment distribution in reservoir, using Empirical Area Reduction method, a computer program in C++ has been developed. For graphical presentation, Microsoft excel has been used. Software HEC-6 is a one-dimensional movable boundary open channel flow numerical model designed to simulate and predict changes in river profiles resulting from scour and/or deposition. In present thesis work Software HEC-6 has been used to compute sediment distribution in reservoir. HEC-6 has several advantages over Empirical Area Reduction method provided the requisite data are available. Lastly, the result obtained from these methods has been compared.
